N2/M19 interchange now open

The interchange is scheduled for completion in July.

THE recent opening of ramp A2 at the N2/M19 Umgeni interchange on Saturday, 13 June has resulted in substantial time savings and vehicle operating costs.

According to Logashri Sewnarain, the South African National Roads Agency, SOC Ltd (SANRAL) eastern region manager, the ramp A2 provides direct access for traffic from the N2 south heading towards Newlands/Inanda Road.

“In the original layout, the north-bound traffic destined for Inanda/Newlands was required to take the Umgeni interchange off-ramp and then proceed across the signalised intersection on the M19 onto the service road and onto Inanda Road,” said Sewnarain.

She added that the longest and highest ramp at the interchange was opened to motorists two weeks ago (11 June) and, prior to this, the south-bound and north-bound ramps leading onto the N2 at the same interchange were opened recently.

“The interchange is scheduled for completion in July, should all the outstanding work be completed, but will largely depend on the contractor’s progress on the site,” said Sewnarain.

SANRAL’s mandate from the government is to finance, improve, manage and maintain the national road network.
