HACT honoured with national award

A local organisation received a prestigious award for the work they do in their fight against HIV/Aids.

THE Hillcrest Aids Centre Trust (HACT) was recently acknowledged for the outstanding work they do in the fight against HIV/Aids. The centre was awarded with a Dira Sengwe Leadership in Aids Award certificate at the seventh SA Aids Conference on Tuesday, 9 June, taking second place.

The conference, which is held every two years, took place in KwaZulu-Natal at the Durban ICC this year. More than 4 000 people from various disciplines and groups participated in the event and more than 200 leaders and researchers in the HIV/Aids field spoke during the three-day conference.

HACT’s CEO, Olivia Myeza, said, “What an honour it was to collect this award on behalf of the 116 Hillcrest Aids Centre Trust team members and our many committed volunteers. The award recognises HACT’s extraordinary contribution to HIV/Aids and is an award for the bravery and courage of an organisation in the fight against HIV.

“This award is for all the staff, volunteers and board members who have worked tirelessly alongside HACT over the past 25 years of our organisation’s history, providing unconditional love and hope to all those impacted by HIV/Aids. Our mission is to continue in the fight against the Aids pandemic until we see HIV eradicated.”

HACT was also invited to present at one of the conference sessions about the work done by the organisation. Themed ‘A Holistic Approach to the HIV/AIDS Pandemic in The Valley of 1 000 Hills’, HACT’s presentation outlined the achievements made through its various programmes over the past 25 years, including community outreach, care, prevention and income generation.
