Mayoral Cup launch for youth development

Mayor to launch youth development programs to commemorate Youth Month.

THE city of Durban will unveil a series of youth development programmes this month to commemorate the sacrifices made by the youth of 1976 and ensure that the youth is fully integrated into the mainstream economy.

“eThekwini Mayor, Cllr James Nxumalo, recognises the role played by sport in building and achieving a caring, united and socially cohesive city,” said eThekwini Municipality’s Head of Communications, Tozi Mthethwa.

The municipality has also established the Youth Development Office as part of the Mayoral programme to ensure that young people contribute to driving the city’s economic growth and development.

Under the theme, ‘Changing People’s Lives Through Radical Economic Transformation and Accelerated Service Delivery’ on Thursday, 11 June, the mayor will launch the Mayoral Cup at the Moses Mabhida Stadium, comprising football and netball sporting codes.

The event is aimed at encouraging young people to be actively involved in arts, culture, sports, recreation and heritage to create a socially cohesive society.

The initiative, which will be conducted in three phases, will start with the launch, followed by the ward and zonal competitions in all 103 wards in 17 zones as well as the grand final, which will be held at the King Zwelithini Stadium next year.
