A TEAM of seven Hillcrest High School pupils won R7 000 for the Best Business Plan in the Ithala School Enterprise Challenge in KwaZulu-Natal.

This challenge falls under the School Enterprise Challenge, which is organised by the UK-based charity, the Teach A Man To Fish organisation, and is sponsored by South Africa’s The Saville Foundation. The competition is a student-led, business start-up competition for schools around the world and was designed as a way of transforming young people from job seekers into job creators.

The team of pupils comprises Junior Mthembu, Mfundo Msomi, Danielle Koen, Krishni Naidoo and Thando Gumede, under the leadership of Mbulelo Mandindi (administration and leader) and Utah Perucatti (treasurer). Their business plan involved the set-up of an events company, King Circle Events, and their first event, a talent show, was a great success. They have also planned a sports event that will take place during the October holidays.

Headmaster, Craig Girvin, and business studies teacher and the team’s supervisor, Erika Burger, were both delighted when they heard of the team’s success. Burger said that this competition had been a great learning curve for the pupils and that the pupils made many personal sacrifices in order to complete the business plan timorously.
