UPDATE: Over 100 cars go up in flames

Fire destroys 101 cars at the Queensburgh police pound.

THE cause of the fire that destroyed over 100 cars at the Queensburgh police pound on Friday night is still unknown. However, reports say the fire could have caught on from a nearby field that was burning.

It is alleged that the current extremely dry conditions and gale-force winds may have fuelled the fire from the field to the parkade. These winds typically measure 60 to 75km/h or 30 to 50 knots. A press release from the eThewkini Municipality said the extent of the damage is still being assessed, and will only be established upon completion of the investigation. No injuries were reported.

eThekwini Metro Police spokesperson, Eugene Msomi, said that most of the cars were going to be put up for auction.
