SCAMS in which victims are promised a large sum of money is increasing, and the Pinetown Corporative Communication department warns people not to fall for it.
Pinetown SAPS communications officer, Cst Phindile Radebe, said there are many variations on this type of scam but the most common in Pinetown is when someone drops an envelope or bag plastic with money inside.
“Victims will pick up the money, honestly thinking that it is their lucky day. The scammers will spot and follow the victim. They will confront the victim, pretending to be police officers, and produce a fake appointment certificate,” said Radebe.
The scammers will then convince the victim to go with them to a private place where they will share the money. The victim will then be robbed of his/her valuables and sometimes raped or murdered by these scammers.
