UPDATE: Number of people dead after N3 Pinetown accident increases to two.

Funeral arrangements have not been announced as yet.

Following an accident on the N3 on Wednesday, it was learned that a Glenwood High School pupil died later in hospital, increasing the death toll to two after the driver of one of the vehicles was reported dead immediately after the tragic collision.

Tristan Stewart was a talented sports star and prefect of the school. His Facebook wall was flooded with messages of disbelief and condolences from his family and friends.

N3 Pinetown accident leaves one dead and seven injured, 3 June:

An accident on the N3 towards Pietermaritzburg, just before the M1 exit before Richmond Road, left one person dead and seven people injured. The four-car pile-up is reported to have been caused by a vehicle traveling east that veered across the centre median and collided head-on with oncoming traffic.

Netcare 911 paramedics, the fire services and other services arrived at the scene and found the roadway obstructed with accident debris and the twisted frames of the four vehicles, leaving only one lane open. After triaging the injured, it was found that one man had tragically died, one was critically injured, and one was in a serious condition, while five escaped with minor injuries.

Paramedics treated the injured at the scene before transporting them to various hospitals for the care that they required.

According Emergency Medical Services several of the those injured were school children.
