Police arrest thousands in Operation Fiela raids

Operation fiela has raked great successes as 12 171 people have been arrested in KwaZulu-Natal for various crimes.

OPERATION Fiela, joint operations between SAPS, SANDF, Department of Home Affairs and Metro Police as 12 171 people have been arrested throughout KwaZulu-Natal.

Police said the aim of the operation is to target those areas that harbor criminals and to seize dangerous weapons, illegal guns, stolen goods and drugs that are in the hands of the criminals as well as to arrest wanted criminals.

Major Thulani Zwane, KZN police spokesman said, since the inception of the operation on Monday, 27 April, police have arrested 223 people for murder, 137 for possession of unlicensed firearms, 169 for rape, 146 for robberies, house breaking, possession of drugs, stock theft, theft, assault, fraud, kidnapping, stock theft and other cases.

“These suspects have appeared in various courts in the province to face criminal charges. During the operation, drugs, liquor, cellphones, jewellery, counterfeit goods, electronic appliance, firearms and ammunition were recovered.

The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni applauded the all role-players for the arrest of suspects throughout the province.

“These operation have yielded positive results and we are very proud of the hard wok displayed by all those involved. We will continue with these operations to ensure that those who break the law are brought to book,” she said.
