8 arrested for drug offences

103 straws of heroin, a parcel of cocaine, dagga, 79 pieces of crack cocaine and 27 mandrax tablets were recovered during the police raid.

EIGHT people were arrested for possession of drugs during a police raid, called Operation Maxi, on Thursday, 23 April.

According to W/O Radhika Marimuthu, corporate communications officer at SAPS Malvern, the station held the operation under the command of station commander, Lt Col Valarine Reddy.

“The team covered the entire Malvern area and also infiltrated neighbouring Shallcross, to a garage in Shallcross which is rife and infamous in the drug trade. Forty-five people were picked up from this garage and taken to SAPS Malvern for questioning. Eight of those people were positively identified by the SAPS Maxi ID machine and were linked to crimes in Malvern and neighbouring areas,” added W/O Marimuthu.

The team recovered 103 straws of heroin, a parcel of cocaine and dagga, 79 pieces of crack cocaine and 27 mandrax tablets. The men were charged with possession of drugs.

“This operation was in line with the increased number of housebreakings in the Malvern area and all forms of curbing this crime were undertaken. The areas from where crime is spilling over into Malvern has to be infiltrated,” said W/O Marimutho.

Lt Col Reddy said the operation was a huge success, as there were positive links of suspects to crimes in Malvern and the neighbouring areas.

She added that operations of this nature would be ongoing, as SAPS Malvern had a zero tolerance approach to all crime and criminal elements.
