‘Green’ school sets the benchmark

Kloof Senior Primary School's recycling monitors have collected more than 700kgs of plastic bottles, which they swapped for a green bench from Enviro Timbers.

KLOOF Senior Primary School has collected 420 kilograms of milk bottles for recycling and received its first green bench from Enviro Timbers.

According to Heidi Boyd of Enviro Timbers, Kloof Senior Primary School followed on from Winston Park Primary School’s project, swapping milk bottles for a school bench.

“The maintenance manager at the school, Craig Brown, and colleague, Kaycee Kelly, have been collecting the milk bottles for recycling and encouraged pupils to do the same. To date, Kloof Senior Primary has has collected 700kg of plastic. For every 420kg of plastic collected, the school will receive a green bench, which works out to be R3 a kilogram,” said Boyd.

Boyd said Enviro Timbers is now collecting more than two tonnes of plastic each month, which saves it going to the landfill sites.

The school’s maintenance manager wanted to encourage more pupils to join the Eco Club and the group of recycling monitors at the school, run by Mrs Janene Halse, to help collect plastic, tins, cardboard and paper.

“Kloof Senior Primary also collected 240 tonnes of glass over a nine-month period, and came second in the country in a glass-recycling competition. The prize money was used to improve facilities at the school. So, recycling also helps earn money for the school. I want to thank the parents, without whom this project would not have been a success,” said Brown.

He challenged other schools to get involved in recycling. Contact Heidi on 071 193 2218 or visit www.envirotimbers.com to learn more about the project.
