Team Garton wins R5000 in Landrover Drive and Ride

The Drive and Ride provided exciting fun for teams and spectators.

Spectacular driving from Derek Garton on the Landrover obstacle course saw him take first place and the R5 000 Land Rover Durban sponsored prize money with daughter, Hannah Garton, on Shiva in the Landrover Ride and Drive at the Horse & Wine festival hosted by the Durban Shongweni Club.

Despite Shiva having a fence down and a refusal, Derek’s tight turns in the Landrover saw them emerge victorious, despite a sterling effort by Alison Inggs on Da Cheeta Girl, whose speedy round just wasn’t fast enough. Her driver, Charlene Inggs, was the only lady driver of the competition, and did a good round apart from loosing some valueable time when she didn’t reverse far enough into the finish box.

Third place went to dad and daughter team, Richard and Erinn Dempsey (on Equal Image), who looked like they might hold on for first place but got edged out in the later stages of the competition.

The eight teams consisted of a driver and horse and rider combo. The driver, with rider as passenger and navigator, had to navigate around a predetermined track in a Land Rover in the fastest possible time without the tennis ball rolling out the bowl on the front of the vehicle, then both driver and rider had to sprint to the waiting horse before the rider could mount horse and complete the 1.10km show-jumping track as fast as possible.
