HUNDREDS of foreign nationals have blocked access to Durban CBD and are engaged in an apparent standoff with South Africans.
Police have confirmed they are on scene and monitoring the situation while they wait for the Public Order Police units to arrive.
Looting of foreign-owned shops allegedly by locals, has also been reported.
Captain Kephu Ndlovu, spokesman for the Durban Central SAPS said crime prevention officers were deployed to the area in and around Queen Street where foreigners, who have borne the brunt of a spate of violent xenophobic attacks by locals in recent weeks across the province, have congregated, essentially blocked access to the city.
Berea Mail reporter Lorna Charles is en route and will post updates from the CBD. Motorists are urged to avoid the area if possible.
