SAPS operation reaps rewards

A month-long special SAPS operation secured the arrests of more than 23 000 people in KwaZulu-Natal for various crimes.

KWAZULU-NATAL police cluster members embarked on several crime prevention operations from 1 March to 7 April, in which 23 881 people were arrested for various crimes in the province.

“They were arrested for various crimes such as murder, attempted murder, robbery, hijackings, rape, assault with an intent to cause grievous bodily harm, dealing in liquor, drunken driving, possession of drugs, contravening the Counterfeit Goods Act, possession of an unlicensed firearm, possession of suspected stolen property and other petty cases. The arrested suspects already appeared in various courts in the province,” said  provincial spokesman, Major Thulani Zwane.

The KwaZulu-Natal provincial commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni, applauded the members for their good work.

“I would like to express my sincere appreciation to all South African Police Service employees for these excellent successes achieved.

“The string of arrests shows that our members are dedicated to their work and are doing everything in their power to ensure that all the South African citizens are safe in our province. Such operations will continue, whereby our members will arrest all those criminals who are still at large,” she said.
