Community rallies support for beloved pizza man

Once again Highway residents open their hearts and wallets to help a local pizza delivery guy who was involved in a crash on Wednesday.

HUNDREDS of Highway residents have joined forces to help one of its own, Clement Goslett, a Waterfall pizza delivery man who was knocked off his delivery bike on Wednesday evening (8 April).

Clement is well-known in the Waterfall and Hillcrest area for his friendly smile and for waving at customers.

It is believed a car, which was turning into a driveway, swerved in front of Clement’s bike. Clement then swerved to avoid hitting the car but smashed into the second oncoming car in Link Road.

Viv Richards, a local resident and customer of Clement’s, said when she heard the friendly delivery man’s bike had been written off in the accident, she decided to take action and founded the Facebook group, Upper Highway Heroes.

“Clement is the local Debonairs pizza delivery guy, who is in his 40’s or 50’s. He’s been working for them for more than 10 years and is famous for riding around on his bike with a huge smile. He greets everyone and knows them by name. Once he’s delivered pizza to you he’ll know you forever,” Viv said.
Viv said she heard about the news of Clement’s accident on another Facebook post on Wednesday night: “When people started piecing together the facts we realised that it was Clement. Everyone started commenting on how they know and love him, saying he is always smiling. A lot of people also offered to help him. So I started a Facebook page and asked anyone who wanted to help to become a member.”
Within 12 hours the group had 358 members, and it grows by the hour: “Some people don’t even live in the area, or do, but have never met him. But they are all sending in offers to help.”
People have offered appliances to auction, motorbikes at good prices, repairs to the motorbike, groceries, vouchers, cellphones, airtime and a lot more.
They have also offered lifts to RK Khan Hospital, where Clement is currently being treated for a broken leg.
“It has been so heart-warming to see the outpouring of generosity. Someone also asked how the occupants of the car were that Clement drove into. They replied and said they were shaken, and that their car is a write-off. Unfortunately they have no insurance as they had just bought it,” Viv added.
Residents have not only rallied to help Clement, but the family whose car Clement smashed into as well.
Lenny Kulapuri, the manager of Debonairs, Linkshills Shopping Centre, said he called the hospital earlier today (Thursday, 9 April) and was told Clement had a broken leg: “I will hopefully visit him later this afternoon. All of us at work wish him well and a speedy recovery.”
