Heavy storm wreaks havoc across upper Highway

Mother Nature lashed the Upper Highway with a heavy storm on Thursday.

UPPER Highway residents faced extreme weather conditions last night (Thursday, 26 March) when Mother Nature unleashed a heavy downpour, which some felt was like a ‘mini-tornado’.

Richard Handcox of the Krantzkloof Nature Reserve said he was at a meeting in Shongweni around 7pm when he saw the storm approaching.

“As I made my way down the hill to my home in Everton, the storm worsened with heavy rainfalls. When I got home I measured 30mm of rain that had fallen, which is quite a lot for just a short storm,” said Handcox.

The storm raged on for an hour, with heavy winds and downfalls that rattled roofs. Trucks travelling on the highway stopped on the side of the road as drivers couldn’t see the roads clearly. Debris and mud covered the highway from Hillcrest through to Pinetown.

Waterfall Crime Watch reported that a tree had fallen down in Rowles Avenue in Waterfall 1 area. Trees also toppled in Brackenhill and have since been cleared, but some debris still remains scattered on the roads. In Mazzarat Farm a tree fell on a car while the driver was inside, but luckily he was not injured.

Two robots were blown over at the intersection of Pick ‘n Pay and SPAR. There were also reports of power failure in most parts of Waterfall 2 last night.
