Observe Earth Hour this Saturday

Residents are encouraged to switch off all lights and electric appliances on Saturday, 28 March between 8.30pm and 9.30pm to observe Earth Hour.

PEOPLE across the globe will unite to protect the environment on Saturday, 28 March to celebrate Earth Hour at 8.30pm.

Earth Hour started in 2007 as a lights-off event to raise awareness about climate change. However, it has grown to engage more than 162 countries and territories worldwide.

Join the Hillcrest Conservancy at the Sprindside Nature Reserve in Hillcrest on Saturday, 28 March at 6pm to celebrate Earth Hour.

Take your family and friends along for an evening of fun, with voluntary and gainful load shedding to experience the magic of Springside at night.

Carry along a blanket and picnic supper, and the conservancy will provide the fun ingredients for young and old. Activities include making an Earth Hour Pledge Lantern, Stokbrood cooking on the fire and storytelling around the bonfire by well-known Durban actor, Neil Coppen.

Entry is a R10 donation per car to assist with conservation projects.

The Westville Conservancy committee, friends and families will gather at the Westville Park to sit on blankets on the slopes, away from the trees to identify the stars. With all the light pollution in Durban, people no longer see, let alone know, the stars and constellations above their heads. The conservancy wants residents to enjoy the dark and the heavens. If it rains, residents are urged to stay at home and just switch off the lights and all appliances to observe Earth Hour from 8.30pm to 9.30pm.
