Rescue technician robbed at gunpoint in Westville

Police are following a positive lead.

A RESCUETECH rescue technician was held up at gunpoint in the Standard Bank/Westville SPAR parking lot in Westville at around 10.20am today (Wednesday, 25 March).

According to Chris Williams, as he got out of his vehicle in the Westville SPAR parking lot, another vehicle with three people – a driver and two passengers in the back – drove up to him.

“The passengers, who were both armed with guns, pointed their guns at me, and my first reaction was to hand over my bag to them. They grabbed the bag and drove off,” said Williams.

Luckily Williams noted the vehicle registration number, and immediately called SA Can to report what happened. SA Can then alerted the local police, who arrived three to four minutes later.

Williams said his bag contained two laptops, his ID book and RescueTech’s bank documents. He opened a case of armed robbery at the Westville SAPS and gave police the robbers’ vehicle registration. The police have traced the registration plates and will be searching the house to which the vehicle has been registered.

Williams said the incident has made things difficult for RescueTech, which is a non-profit organisation.

“It has become a nightmare for me, as it will be difficult to change the bank signatories without an ID book. I guess it’s just a long wait from here,” said Williams.

Police are currently following a positive lead and Williams hopes to have some good news soon.
