Puppy rescued from drainpipe

A puppy was rescued from a drainpipe after three hours.

A THREE-hour rescue operation ended on a positive note when a puppy was rescued from a drainpipe on Sunday. A young man, Jabulani Ndlovu heard the cries of the puppy who was deeply wedged into a drainpipe close to his home in Thole Street, in New Germany. He contacted the Kloof and Highway SPCA and, shortly after, Inspector Petros Simamane from the SPCA arrived at the scene.

Lisa Gadd, PR and outreach officer for the Kloof and Highway SPCA, said, “Upon arrival, Ndlovu directed Simamane to the area where the crying was first heard. Simamane opened the first manhole, but could not see any dog. A second manhole was opened. Although he could hear what sounded like a puppy crying, he still could not see any movement. Simamane then decided to call Rescue Tech, who promptly arrived with 16m long extension poles. After battling for a while and still not having any success, the fire department was called in.”

While waiting for the fire department to arrive, they put food down to try and lure him, but the pup was terrified and kept going in deeper. Eventually the pup appeared, and Petros scooped him up with a net.

According to Gadd, the pup was infested with ticks, fleas and worms and was immediately taken to the Kloof and Highway SPCA. The pup was dewormed and treated for ticks and fleas. It was also given food and water and a comfortable place to recover from its ordeal.

A resident from New Germany who witnessed the rescue, has already applied to adopt the rescued pup from the Kloof and Highway SPCA, should an owner not come forward to claim ownership of the pup. The Kloof and Highway SPCA would like to thank Jabulani Ndlovu who phoned the SPCA timeously and prevented the pup from suffering unnecessarily. Kloof and Highway SPCA can be contacted on 031 764 1212/3 or after-hours on 073 3359 322 for all animal related emergencies.
