A literary marathon

Atholl Heights Primary School pupils helped many children less fortunate than themselves.

GRADE 7 pupils at Atholl Heights Primary School in Westville raced excitedly to the school hall at midday on Friday, 27 February to start their 20-hour ‘Read Your Heart Out’ challenge.

The 20-hour period was broken up into hourly slots, in which the children read for an hour and then participated in different activities.

Some of the activities included 120 loaves of bread made into sandwiches, which were donated to Inchanga Primary School, together with more bread, sugar, jam and peanut butter.

Chocolates made by the children were donated to CHOC, the Childhood Cancer Foundation (Durban Branch) and Ethelbert Children’s Home, together with other exciting food donations.

A midnight feast and swim were other highlights of the event.

Parents collected their exhausted but excited children on Saturday morning at 8am, most of whom had not closed an eye during the 20 hours.

Debbie Crawford, media liaison officer at the school, said: “Our Grade 7 pupils were proud of themselves, having helped so many children less fortunate

than themselves while having so much fun.”
