Report reveals spike in crime rate

Several homes in the Highway area were targeted by burglars and thieves last week.

A HOUSE robbery was reported in Kloof View Road, Forest Hills, involving a group of men who were armed with knives and a firearm. According to a post by the SA Community Crime Watch group, the men entered the house through a window yesterday at around 11.45pm. The group of four or five men stole a silver Mazda 3 (NU 140 935) before fleeing. A Honda Ballade with no rear number plate was allegedly involved in the robbery.

Meanwhile, Blue Security’s latest crime report revealed burglars and thieves targeted homes in Crestholme, Kloof, Winston Park and Pinetown over the past week.

Two housebreakings and an armed robbery were reported in Crestholme. Operations manager for Blue Security, Brian Jackson, said, “Two armed men broke into a house in Crestholme Drive on Wednesday morning and held up the property owner before fleeing with cash, jewellery and a brush cutter.

“Two homes in Riverview Road were also burgled in the past week. Burglars smashed a window and forced open the burglar bars to gain entry into the first house, then ransacked the main bedroom. The gang smashed the flat screen television and fled with two Canon cameras, a laptop, a paintball gun and jewellery.”

In a separate incident, a Pinetown family was held up by armed robbers in their home in Glen Place at 7pm on Thursday.

“A gang of four robbers, armed with firearms, climbed over the property fence and held up the residents. The gang fled in the family’s two cars with televisions, cellphones, an electronic tablet, jewellery and wallets. Both vehicles were later recovered.”

Jackson also warned business owners to be alert after a gang of three men had targeted a business in Village Road in Kloof.

“Our officer responded to the scene after three men arrived at the business and started questioning a cashier, who then asked them to leave the premises. It was unclear whether the men were armed, but they fled in a grey Toyota Tazz with no number plates. The staff noticed later that a cellphone had been stolen. We advise business owners to be alert, and to educate and empower staff to always be vigilant, and to equip them with sufficient panic alarms so that they can call your security company in an emergency,” he said.
