World Read Aloud Day celebrated

World Read Aloud Day is celebrated worldwide on the first Wednesday in March.

GRADE 1 pupils from Malvern Primary School and Jumpstart Montessori Pre-School attended Malvern Library’s activities for World Read Aloud Day on Wednesday, 4 March.

According to library assistant, Hayley Lawson, World Read Aloud Day is an important time for reflecting on the value of literacy and reading.

“World Read Aloud Day is about taking action to show the world that the right to read and write belongs to all people. World Read Aloud Day motivates children, teens and adults worldwide to celebrate the power of words, also creating a community of readers advocating for every child’s right to education and access to books,” said Lawson.

The day’s programme at the library commenced with a colouring-in competition and face-painting, followed by storytelling by Hayley, and then a group session of reading out loud.

Various other librarians attended the event, as well as district librarian, Musa Radebe, and senior manager for libraries, Tebogo Mzizi.

Mzizi said Read Aloud Day is observed throughout the world on the first Wednesday of March. She said usually libraries are quiet places, but on that particular day everyone could read out loud.

“We want people, especially children, to increase their confidence in reading; not just for study purposes but for pleasure too. Anyone can observe this day. The power of the word is very important and can be fun too,” said Mzizi.

District librarian, Musa Radebe, led the storytelling by reading some of ‘Sisanda’s Gift’, with librarian, Hayley Lawson, completing the story.
