Hillcrest man injured in armed robbery

He was dragged into his house and robbed.

A HILLCREST resident was injured during an armed robbery when he went outside to empty his rubbish bins last week. According to Blue Security operations manager, Brian Jackson, the two robbers attacked the resident at around 7.45am at his Valley Drive home.

Jackson said, “The resident walked to the back of his property to offload the rubbish and was attacked by two men, who were sitting on the bins. One of the robbers was armed with a screwdriver.

“The robbers dragged the resident along the ground into his house, and then robbed his wife of her jewellery and demanded cash before fleeing,” he said.

He urged residents to be vigilant when completing their routine chores, as criminals are known to stake out properties before striking.

“If you notice any suspicious individuals lurking near your property, report them to your security company. Being proactive about reporting suspicious activity can go a long way in preventing a crime.

“Consider installing external security beams on your property to provide an early warning system if an intruder enters the garden, and as an additional measure let your dog run outside first in the morning before you go out to empty the trash.

“You can also set up your cellphone as an additional panic button that can be discreetly used in an emergency within 50 metres of a home alarm system,” said Jackson.

Netcare 911 paramedics attended the scene and treated the resident before he was taken to hospital. The Hillcrest SAPS also responded to the scene.
