WBHS maintains top form in sports against Northwood

Despite the inclement weather on Saturday, WBHS managed to complete 20 cricket matches and all water polo games.

WESTVILLE Boys’ High School was hosted by Northwood in the major summer sports – cricket, basketball and water polo – on Saturday.

Unfortunately a heavy downpour early on Saturday morning put paid to the basketball and the cricket matches played at Northwood. Despite the inclement weather, WBHS completed 20 cricket matches and all water polo games. The overall results remained impressive, with very competitive performances from all teams, and the win/loss stats in all codes indicative of their dominance on the day against their Durban North rivals.

In cricket news, WBHS won 12 of the 14 games played against Northwood. Unfortunately the wet weather affected six games, including the first X1, U15A and 14A, which were all rained out. In the open age group WBHS recorded a clean sweep from seconds to fifths. The second team won by three wickets with good contributions from Tristan Vermaak (4/21) and Dale Freemantle (47). The third team was competitive in their match against Kloof first X1, restricting them to 140/8 in their allotted overs, and were then in a good position at 54/2 when rain stopped play and the match was drawn.

In water polo news, WBHS recorded a clean sweep, winning all seven of the matches played with a goal difference of 44.

Despite basketball coaches, Brad Rowe and Andrew Stewart’s concerns that the first team would not fare well against a strong Northwood side, which recently beat Clifton, their young charges rose to the occasion to outplay their more fancied opponents and win convincingly 6-3: a superb team effort. Gareth Lillywhite produced a man of the match performance, scoring three spectacular goals. He was ably supported by the lefty, Grant Hewitt, with two goals from extra man set plays.

In golf news, WBHS continued their good results against Kearsney by winning the first and second team matches on the Cotswold Downs Course, 5½ – 2½ and 6½ – 1½ respectively. The third team beat DHS seconds 8-0.
