Hillcrest teacher arrested for fraud
A Hillcrest teacher and her son were arrested last week Wednesday for fraud linked to a murder investigation.
THE Durban Commercial Crime Unit arrested a three people aged between 24 and 56 for fraud on Wednesday, 25 February. Among them were a Hillcrest teacher (55) and her 24-year-old son.-
According to Col Jay Naicker, KZN police spokesman, police discovered the body of Sifiso Hlongwane in Tongaat sugarcane fields with stab wounds on 5 May 2014.-
“A few days after the incident on 14 May 2014, the 55-year-old teacher lodged claims with an insurance company to the total value of R11 million.-
“The cover was taken and two premiums were paid before Hlongwane was found dead. On investigation it was discovered that the voice of the teacher’s son was the one which took the life cover as Sifiso Hlongwane and making his mom the sole beneficiary. –
“Both the mother and son were arrested and charged for fraud,” said Naicker.-
In the other case, a Newcastle businessman (56) was also arrested after he lodged a R4 million claim with an insurance company, three days after the murder of his employee, Umesh Rabilal. –
KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni commended the members for the apprehension of the suspects. –
“We hope that these arrests will send a clear message to fraudsters that their days are numbered. –
“No matter how elaborate your plans are, the long arm of the law will catch you out,” she said.-
