Hillcrest teacher arrested for fraud

A Hillcrest teacher and her son were arrested last week Wednesday for fraud linked to a murder investigation.

THE Durban Commercial Crime Unit arrested a three people aged between 24 and 56 for fraud on Wednesday, 25 February. Among them were a Hillcrest teacher (55) and herĀ  24-year-old son.-

According to Col Jay Naicker, KZN police spokesman, police discovered the body of Sifiso Hlongwane in Tongaat sugarcane fields with stab wounds on 5 May 2014.-

“A few days after the incident on 14 May 2014, the 55-year-old teacher lodged claims with an insurance company to the total value of R11 million.-

“The cover was taken and two premiums were paid before Hlongwane was found dead. On investigation it was discovered that the voice of the teacherā€™s son was the one which took the life cover as Sifiso Hlongwane and making his mom the sole beneficiary. –

“Both the mother and son were arrested and charged for fraud,” said Naicker.-

In the other case, a Newcastle businessman (56) was also arrested after he lodged a R4 million claim with an insurance company, three days after the murder of his employee, Umesh Rabilal. –
KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni commended the members for the apprehension of the suspects. –
“We hope that these arrests will send a clear message to fraudsters that their days are numbered. –
“No matter how elaborate your plans are, the long arm of the law will catch you out,” she said.-
