10 years for UKZN campus rapist

The Pinetown Regional Court convicted and sentenced a 22-year-old man for raping a UKZN student.

A MAN who raped a University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) student while her boyfriend was sleeping next to her was sentenced to 10 years by the Pinetown Regional Court on Monday.

According to KZN police spokesman, Col Jay Naicker, on 25 February 2012, the victim(21) and her boyfriend were at their campus residence when the rape happened.

“She was raped by Xabiso Xaki (22) while her boyfriend was fast asleep. When she woke her boyfriend, Xaki attempted to flee. The boyfriend gave chase and was able catch the accused,” said Naicker.

A case was opened at the Westville police station. Xaki appeared before the Pinetown Regional Court and was found guilty of rape and sentenced to 10 years imprisonment.

The Provincial Commissioner of KwaZulu-Natal, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni expressed her appreciation to police, the prosecutor and judiciary for ensuring that this predator pays for his crime.

“Any form of violence directed at women and children will not be tolerated and the SAPS will make sure that perpetrators are brought to book,” said Ngobeni.

My name is Sanelisiwe Tsinde, and I'm a mother of two boys and very family-oriented. Being a community journalist for years, I can proudly say I love writing about positive community news articles and giving a voice to the voiceless. Seeing people getting assistance warms my heart. Every day is a different challenge and a new learning opportunity. I supply news for our trusted publication weekly, and a few years ago, Caxton ventured into online publication, so I contribute daily to the websites. I could say I am a multimedia journalist, and working in a community newspaper is beneficial as we do not focus on one thing but we do a bit of everything.
