Kearsney in top form against Glenwood

Kearsney College won two out of three sports against Glenwood at the weekend.

KEARSNEY College enjoyed another action-packed sports weekend, winning two out of three sports against Glenwood.

Kearsney won 11 of the 16 cricket matches played on Saturday, including the first X1, which won by five wickets. Glenwood batted first but were all bowled out for 115 with Grobbelaar scoring a very good 50. From Kearsney’s side, Matthew Lees took an impressive 4/15.

Kearsney scored the winning runs with 20 overs to spare, with captain, James Tedder, on 51 not out and with good contributions from Callix Gray (23) and James Stamatis (23 not out).

In basketball news, Kearsney’s first team beat Glenwood’s first 58-38. Glenwood scored the first five points. By half-time Kearsney had a ten-point cushion and played well in the third quarter.

They were able to open the gap to 20 points and never looked back. Kearsney captain, Albert Ojo-Aramokudu, did not play in the game due to an injury he sustained two weeks ago, but will hopefully be fit to play in the final game of the season against Westville Boys’ High.

In water polo news, Glenwood’s first team beat Kearsney’s first team 10-5. Kearsney kept the game even at 2-2 at the end of the first chukka. The second and third chukkas were frustrating affairs for Kearsney.

With the score at 8-3 at the end of the third chukka it seemed the floodgates would open, but Kearsney consolidated their defence and fought back to 8-5. A further two defensive lapses by Kearsney put some gloss on the final score of 10-5 to Glenwood.

Kearsney’s top squash players competed in the weekend’s KZN pre-season squash tournament on Friday and Sunday. Eighteen players entered, with the following players achieving notable results: Callix Gray came fourth, Graham Hudson fifth and Brenton Scott-Martin seventh in the U19 category. Brandon Nel came third in the U16 category and Reid Stewart third in the U14 category.

In canoeing news, the Kearsney boys raced on the Bushmans River in Escourt at the weekend. The medium-low river tested the skills of the paddlers.

A great team effort saw the school’s top five paddlers all finishing in the top 25 overall: Rory McNeill (seventh), Gavin Keeley (thirteenth), Timothy Marsh (fifteenth), Evan Knight (sixteenth) in the U18 category, and Matthew Pitcher (sixth) and Robert McConnell (ninth) in the U16 category.
