WIN: Picoult redefines relationships and closure in latest novel

One lucky reader can win an autographed copy of Jodi Picoult's new book, Leaving Time.

JODI Picoult fans received a real treat when they met their favourite author at the official book launch of her latest novel, Leaving Time, at Exclusive Books in Westville last Wednesday.

This is Picoult’s 23rd novel and her eighth No.1 New York Times Bestseller.

This fresh and intriguing novel is about a mother’s love, a daughter’s search for the truth and a mystery that will not rest.

Jenna Metcalf (13) was with her mother, Alice, an elephant researcher, when she disappeared 10 years before after a tragic accident at their sanctuary for former circus and zoo elephants in New England, but she remembers nothing. More than 10 years have passed, and still Jenna reads and rereads her mother’s journals, hoping to find some hidden clue in the meticulous recording of her scientific research with elephants.

Desperate for answers, Jenna uses all her savings to recruit the aid of a private detective and a psychic.

Picoult has penned yet another gripping and powerful story of a young girl’s determination to uncover the truth, however shocking and life-changing it may be.

“Leaving Time explores the mother-daughter relationship, be it elephant or human, and the idea that those we can’t forget are never truly gone,” said Picoult.

She also considers herself an activist through her fictional novels.

“Fiction is a way to hook readers into subjects they don’t usually get into. This book is also about the plight of elephants in Africa, and what other way than to encourage readers to take note of this plight and create awareness of it, than in this book?” said Picoult.

The book is retailing for R302 at Exclusive Books in the Pavilion.

When asked about her concern about people worldwide who do not read, she advised to let people read anything they want to – from fiction, to sports magazines, to blogs on the internet or even apps and on tablets.

“Its not about what they are reading. People read differently. It’s about getting people to fall in love with the act of reading, so I say let them read whatever they want to,” said Picoult.
