Shakespearean tragedy, ‘Macbeth’, takes centre stage

Westville Boys’ High School presents its annual Shakespearean production with an ambitious staging of The Bard’s final great tragedy, 'Macbeth'.

WESTVILLE Boys’ High School’s Roy Couzens Theatre opens its 2015 season and 60th anniversary year with a new production of William Shakespeare’s ‘Macbeth’, directed by Luke Holder.

After the runaway success of 2014’s ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’, Westville Boys’ presents its Shakespearean production with an ambitious staging of The Bard’s final great tragedy. ‘Macbeth’ runs for a limited season only, from 10 February until 13 February. Matinée performances for all high school pupils who study ‘Macbeth’ as a setwork at school also run concurrently during the day.

Tempted by the prophecies of three mysterious witches, Macbeth’s ambition to be King of Scotland leads him into a nightmarish world of evil, deceit, and murder. Monstrous actions run rampant as he and Lady Macbeth lose themselves to unstoppable drives of savagery and political atrocity.

Featuring spectacular swordfight choreography, live music and stunning visual effects (including an indoor rain machine), this classic tale of power and madness promises to be like nothing audiences have ever seen on the Westville stage.

The terrifying final performance of William Shakespeare’s ‘Macbeth’ at Westville Boys’ High School takes the form of a formal medieval banquet. If you are looking for an alternative to Valentine’s Day, or simply an excuse to dress up in proper Renaissance clothing, join the cast on Friday, 13 February for a five-course banquet and the final performance of ‘Macbeth’ – a lusty, passionate and genuinely terrifying homage to the pursuit of power and the violent love that accompanies it. All proceeds from the banquet will be donated to charity.

Tickets are R50 for adults and R30 for scholars for the 6pm performances. The once-off supper theatre medieval banquet takes place on Friday, 13 February at a cost of R300 each. Bookings are now open at Westville Boys’ High School. Contact the school on 031 267 1330 or email tickets@wbhs.co.za.
