HACT’s ‘gogo groups’ support gogos in need

Gogo support groups give grannies emotional and financial support.

AFTER years of strife and struggle, Martha Mabuza, a grandmother of five, found solace in the comfort of joining one of the Hillcrest Aids Centre Trust’s (HACT) many ‘gogo groups’.

When her daughter-in-law passed away from HIV/Aids she stepped up as the sole provider for her family. Her only source of income was a government grant, and even though her grandchildren insisted on trying to find jobs the money she received was not enough to fund their transport costs to get to town to hand out their CVs.

A KwaNyuswa granny support group member noticed how stressed Martha was and suggested she join the group. With the help and support of the group, the 74-year-old was able to find a way to support the grandchildren in her care, ensuring that they are always fed, clothed and have a roof over their heads.

“I am so happy to be with other grannies because we share ideas and secrets, pray together and advise each other. Being involved in the group has allowed me to earn an extra income from selling vegetables to our neighbours, and it contributes to buying clothes and paying school fees,” said Martha.

At a recent training session for the Gogolympics, Martha exclaimed how excited she was to be taking part in her fourth HACT sporting event. “The Gogolympics provides an opportunity to meet other grannies, and playing together helps us forget everything else that is going on in our lives.”

For Martha the Gogolympics has become the highlight in her year, and she encourages all Highway community members to join in the celebration of health and wellbeing on Friday, 13 March at the kwaNyuswa Sports Grounds from 8am to 3pm.
