Murderer handed 15-year sentence

A man was sentenced to 15 years in jail for a 2011 murder and firearm-related charges.

A 46-YEAR-old man was convicted and sentenced to 15 years for murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition after several appearances in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court.

Pinetown SAPS communications officer, Lt Bongumusa Manqele said on 9 March, 2011 at about 7am the 46-year-old-victim victim was selling goods from the boot of his car in Gillitts Road, Westmead when he was shot twice in the chest and once in the face.

“It is alleged that the deceased was shot because he did not return an amount of ‘stokvel’ money.

“The accused was sentenced to 10 years for murder and five years imprisonment for possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

“A case of murder was opened at Pinetown police station for further investigation and within a month, on 8 April, 2011 the accused was arrested and charged,” said Manqele.

Diligent work by the investigating officer is commended.
