Kearsney bags two wins and a loss

Kearsney College enjoyed a full weekend of sports in cricket, basketball, tennis and canoeing,

KEARSNEY enjoyed a successful clean sweep against DHS on Saturday, winning all the cricket matches played on the day in emphatic fashion.

The first XI achieved a good win against rivals at DHS, with Graham Hudson, son of Old Boy and convenor of selectors Andrew Hudson, top-scoring with 38. Cameron Lees had an excellent day with the ball, ending with figures of 3/40.

DHS first X1 scored 157/7, Kearsney first X1 scored 158/5 and Kearsney won by five wickets.

Kearsney first XI has made it through to the regional final of the National T 20 challenge competition, after beating DHS comfortably last Friday by eight wickets. They now play Glenwood at Kingsmead.

However, Kearsney couldn’t carry their success to the basketball field. Kearsney travelled to DHS for the second match in the season, and in hot and dry conditions were given a basketball lesson by a much more athletic and aggressive team.

Kearsney were in the game in the first quarter, only trailing by six points, in spite of the loss of their captain and talisman Albert Ojo-Aramokudu due to a twisted ankle. Kearsney were not able to capitalise on their scoring opportunities and they drifted further back from their opponents.

The athleticism and speed of the DHS players was too much for the Kearsney team and they were handed their worst defeat in a while. The Kearsney team will have to go back to the drawing board and work hard to pick up the pieces if they are to reach their true potential, after losing 33-66.

In tennis news, Kearsney beat Clifton 7-5.

Kearsney canoeists participated in the Dash and Crash in Pietermaritzburg on a full river. Notable achievements went to Rory McNeill (12th, U18), Gavin Keeley (15th, U18), Callam Davis (8th, U16) and Matthew Pitcher (9th, U16).

On Sunday the boys raced in the 28km Campbells to Dusi Bridge. Notable achievements went to Rory McNeill, who came 91st overall, and Matthew Pitcher (4th, U16).
