Armed robbers target liquor store

A liquor store in Botha's Hill was robbed by six armed men last week.

A GROUP of six armed robbers entered a Botha’s Hill liquor shop in the early hours of last Wednesday (21 January). According to the Waterfall Crime Watch Facebook page, the men arrived in two vehicles and forced their way onto the premises.

The men succeeded in removing the security gate after several attempts. They grabbed bottles of liquor, loaded their two vehicles and fled.
Meanwhile, two constables from the KwaDabeka SAPS, Const Shozi and Const Zungu, were driving towards Botha’s Hill. The officers noticed what was happening and gave chase.

The chase ended in the Kwanyuswa township. The suspects opened fire on the officers, who returned fire. The bakkie was forced into a dead end where more shots were exchanged.

One suspect was wounded and arrested while the other escaped. The suspects in the second vehicle also managed to flee the scene.
The crime watch group further stated on its Facebook page that this is only one of several attempts in the last few weeks by groups who use the same modus operandi in the upper Highway area, and in particular the Hillcrest CBD.

The post read, “There is a strong possibility that it could be the same group. They operate between 4am and 6am. They are armed and considered dangerous. Security companies need to inform their guards to be extra vigilant and to report any suspicious vehicles or activity to their control room. The vehicles to look out for are a black BMW and a black Audi. They both have dark tinted windows with silver mags. There was also a red VW Polo involved in a similar incident last week . These guys seem to be targeting computer shops, and one such shop has had two robbery attempts in less than two weeks.”
