Family dog stabbed while protecting owners

Despite his age, Kingsley fought to protect his family from an attack.

A brave family dog fought for his owners’ safety during a home invasion at their property in Jan Smuts Avenue, Winston Park, but got stabbed in the process.

On Monday, 17 December at approximately 7.10am, Kloof & Highway trainee Inspector Petra Abrams received a request from manager, Barbara Laubscher, to rush to aid the traumatised, injured pet, who was in shock after his ordeal.

When Abrams arrived on the scene she found the 13-year-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier (‘Staffie’) named Kingsley in the bathroom with a stab wound to his back.

Abrams managed to get him out of the bathroom, assisted by inspector Syd Nkomo, who helped her load the dog into her SPCA vehicle. Kingsley was taken to the SPCA where he received immediate veterinary treatment.

The knife had penetrated his intercostal muscles, luckily missing vital organs, but had caused a “dead space” that was filling up with blood. Dr Yeshindra Govender treated the wounds and a tube was inserted to drain the blood from the wounds.

Kingsley is back with his grateful family and is healing well.

Dr Govender said, “Staffies have a very strong instinct to protect. It is very impressive that at his ripe old age of 13 years he risked his life for his family, trying to protect them from armed robbers.”
