49 pupils in matric error nightmare

Forty-nine local girls were in tears after their exam numbers did not appear in the paper when the 2014 matric results were released.

DEPRESSED, disappointed and surprised were just some of the emotions that 49 pupils at Queensburgh Girl’s High School reported to have felt after their exam numbers did not appear in the newspaper last night.

Matric pupils all over South Africa eagerly awaited their final results and pored over newspapers with their friends and families and searched for their exam numbers, but 49 girls got the shock of their lives when they realised their exam numbers were not printed even though they were sure they had passed.

“At first I thought I had not looked properly, but after reading the paper over and over again I accepted my name was not there which I found hard to believe,” said Londeka Dube.

The problem seems to have been with the department of education as all 49 pupils had actually passed, some had even received distinctions.

“We started suspecting something was wrong when we started calling each other and realised that many of us hadn’t appeared in the paper, and most of us had taken Geography,” added Mapuni Mzobe.

Nokwanda Ndlovu, who searched for her exam number with her mother, said she barely slept. “My mom and I cried so hard, I was devastated, I tossed and turned the whole night even after my peers had tried to reassure me by saying there must have been a mistake.”

All 49 girls made their way to the school early this morning and discovered that there indeed had been an error and received their certificates.
