Much loved nativity scene needs your help

Contribute to the survival of the Westville Nativity Scene by helping set it up on Sunday, 7 December.

A WESTVILLE resident is in need of help to ensure the continuation of Westville’s iconic nativity scene at the intersection of Buckingham Terrace and St James Avenue.

The annual project was overseen by one woman, Helen Cannon, for nine years. She would do all of the planning, organising and would cover all of the costs from her own pocket, but she is no longer able to continue with the festive scene.

Another Westville resident, Jen Strachan, said that it would be a loss to the community to lose something like that and began a Facebook campaign to ensure its survival.

“I have already organised for most things to be done, but I really need the community to come on board and help me set up the nativity scene,” said Jen.

A few of the items on her wishlist are helpers to assemble the stable, someone willing to dig a small trench to bury the electrical cables and a full-time security guard once the project has been completed. “There are also a few minor things that I will need help with, from repairing a few of the props to painting the animals and clothing the mannequins,” said Jen.

To view a full list for the nativity scene, visit the Facebook page Westville Nativity. The setting up of the nativity scene will take place on Sunday, 7 December from noon and the lights will be turned on at 6pm. To keep in with the spirit of giving, there will be a carol service and candles will be sold at R5 each and all proceeds will go to the Kloof and Highway SPCA while the funds raised from the cold drinks sold on the evening (R10 each) will be given to the Monkey Helpline.
