Councillor slams MEC following deadly M13 crash

Local councillor, Rick Crouch, asks how many more lives must be lost on the M13 before the MEC of Transport, Community Safety and Liaison bans trucks off Fields Hill.

WARD 10 councillor, Rick Crouch, has asked how many more lives must be lost until something is done about heavy goods trucks using the M13.

This comes after an elderly woman died when the car she and her daughter were travelling in was crushed by a truck carrying concrete blocks on Friday, 28 November at about 9.45am.

“If  the MEC of Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu, had acted by banning all heavy trucks on Field’s Hill as I had been requesting, the victim would be alive today and her family would be enjoying her company. The MEC has her blood on his hands,” Crouch said.

“There was no reason for this truck to be on Field’s Hill other than to avoid the weigh station on the N3. The weigh station is the reason these trucks use Field’s Hill it is not the tolls.

Once Again I ask the MEC to stop practicing tombstone legislation. How many more tombstones do we need on Field’s Hill before he takes action. It is a shame that the MEC is playing politics with people’s lives,” Crouch concluded.

The Department of Community Safety and Liaison has not commented as yet.
