Equestrian paramedic welcomes donation

Local paramedic valued by the horsey community.

Top Hat Shows and The Stable Cat/Unicorn Tack have donated R3000 to local paramedic, Shannon Charles towards the purchase of medical supplies.

Each year Top Hat Shows, a show holding body primarily for training dressage events and the brain child of dressage coach and competitor, Heather Cochrane, chooses someone to raise funds for. In the past they have raised money for paving at the dressage arenas at the Durban Shongweni Club, The Jess Foord Foundation, Hospice and others. This year they decided Shannon Charles would be the worthy recipient.

Top Hat Shows raised R2000 with a “harvest table” raffle at a dressage show at Durban Shongweni Club on 2 November and Chris Mudgway of Unicorn Tack/The Stable Cat donated an extra R1000.

“He is always available to be the required paramedic at our dressage shows and for other disciplines such as show jumping, cross-country and vaulting and is at the end of his cell phone for any emergency where he can help,” said Sally McGrath, KZN Dressage.

Charles is a well known paramedic on the equestrian scene and has been instrumental in providing often life saving treatment to riders.

“With equestrian shows there is always the risk of serious injuries, so it is important to have a paramedic on scene or on call as First Aiders don’t have the training, equipment and knowledge and are limited to what they can do,” said Charles.

Chris Mudgway added, “In an accident, time and response is critical. That is why it is so important to create awareness and support and to make riders aware of emergency numbers that they can phone.”
