Drug syndicate accused to apply for bail soon

The men who were arrested for allegedly manufacturing drugs in Westville, as well as two men who were caught with millions worth of drugs in Middleburg, have appeared in court again.

THE two Durban business partners and their accomplices, who were arrested two weeks ago, appeared in the Middleburg and Pinetown courts for dealing in drugs. Their cases were postponed for formal bail application.

On Tuesday, 4 November Durban club owner, Gregory Lyris (45), and Bulgarian national Valari Nikolov (41) were arrested with ecstasy tablets.

Early on Wednesday police raided a Westville home and arrested the homeowner, Gareth John Brissett (40) and two other men, Sakhile Dlamini (28) and John Maphumulo (32) for possession of precursor chemicals used to manufacture drugs.

On 10 November follow-up investigations were conducted and the SAPS team uncovered a micro warehouse being used for what appears to be a clandestine drug laboratory with multiple machines, drums of precursor chemicals, drugs and an undisclosed amount of cash.

The team further established that the warehouse was being leased by one of the five accused that were arrested last week. Further investigations are underway primarily to determine to what extent the accused may be linked with this warehouse.

Lyris and Nikolov appeared in the Middleburg Magistrates’ Court and their case was postponed to 24 November 2014 for a formal bail application.

The cases of Brissett, Dlamini and Maphumulo were also postponed to 1 December 2014 for a formal bail application as well.

The state said it will oppose bail.
