Police chase ends in deadly shootout

Two people killed in a shootout in Camperdown.

Two people were killed in cross fire with police in Camperdown last night.

Police received information about wanted suspects who were driving along the N3 freeway near Camperdown on Thursday, 6 November.

A joint operation by Pietermaritzburg and Flying Squad was conducted and the vehicle fitting the description of the one the wanted men were driving was spotted.

According to police, officers tried to stop  said vehicle but the driver refused to pull over. A chase ensued and it is alleged that the occupants of the vehicle started to shoot at the officers.

Police allegedly retaliated in self-defense and two suspects were fatally shot. Two other suspects managed to flee the scene of foot.

Two unlicensed firearms, laptops and cellphones were recovered. It is suspected that the laptops and cellphones recovered were taken from a business robbery  reported in the Dundee area this month.

The vehicle, a VW Polo had allegedly been stolen from the Berea area.

The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni praised the police for their actions.

“The police will defend themselves if they are attacked while performing their duties. The recovered firearms will be sent for ballistic tests to establish if they were used in any other crimes in the province.

We also encourage the community to continue to support the police in the fight against crime by providing valuable information that will lead to the arrest of the criminals,” said Ngobeni.
