Star College pupils win schools chess tourney

The Star College chess team now faces the daunting task of taking on the top schools in KZN.

STAR College Boys’ High School’s U15 chess team has, since the beginning of 2014, been working its way rapidly up the ladder of success, winning the Durban and Districts Top Schools Floating Trophy for two consecutive years.

According to the school’s principal, Osman Karaayvaz, each player is passionate about chess and they play the game whenever they get a chance – even in between their demanding academic curriculum.

“The boys, however, do claim that playing chess helps them with logical thinking, planning skills, problem solving and anticipating consequences,” said Karaayvaz.

They recently won the Durban North West Championships against Westville Boys High School and now they have won the Durban and Districts Top Schools Championships. This was an outstanding achievement especially because the same Star College Chess Team won the same tournament last year.

The Durban and Districts Top Schools Floating Trophy is presented annually by the KZN Department of Sports and Recreation.

Mr Wandile Ndlovu, KZN Dept of Sport and Recreation awarded the trophy to the school at a special assembly on Wednesday 15 October.
