Six donkeys killed in M13 accident

6 donkeys were killed on the M13 on Saturday night.

A tragic accident on the evening of Saturday, 1 November on the M13 near the Kassier Road offramp claimed the lives of six donkeys.

The donkeys had escaped from Out of the Blue Animal Sanctuary in Alvestone and ended up on the freeway where they were hit by vehicles. Five were killed and another one had to be humanely euthanized.

The Kloof & Highway SPCA, Coastal Horse Care Unit and Metro Police attended the horrific scene.

Apparently no people were injured in the collision.

“Coastal Horse Care Unit and Kloof and Highway SPCA were in attendance and were unable to locate anymore donkeys after searching the surrounding area. The owners of the donkeys were informed on the night of the accident, but were unable to attend the scene,” said Gill Olmesdahl, manager of the Coastal Horse Care Unit.

A meeting was held on Monday, 3 November with the owners of the donkeys to address the issues of the animals escaping from the property.

“The owners have agreed to sign over some of their remaining horses/donkeys to both Kloof and Highway SPCA and the Coastal Horse Care Unit. Strict warnings from both societies have been given to the owners of the horses and donkeys and they will continue to be monitored,” said Olmesdahl.
