Kyle is living his musical dream

Highway Mail speaks to our very own idol, Kyle Deutschmann.

LOCAL lad and Westville Old Boy, Kyle Deutschmann, is aiming for the stars since making the top six in Idols SA.

The Highway Mail recently caught up with the talented performer and here is what he had to say:

Have you auditioned for Idols before?

I entered before in season eight, two years ago. Back then I entered for the fun and to see if I could actually sing and had what it took. I made it to the top 32 that season. This season I entered again with purpose to go far in the competition and jump start a music career.

When did you realise you were musically talented?

I started playing guitar in Grade 8, I had always had an ear for music, but only then did I start to harness that and sing along to songs while learning to play the guitar. Learning an instrument definitely helped with developing and acknowledging that I could sing.

What is your favourite song?

My favourite song of all time, because of the meaning behind the song, the lyrical content and execution, has to be Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls, which was written for the movie City of Angels.

Which singer is your role model?

I have a couple for different genres and they change all the time but at the moment I really look up to Adam Levine, lead singer of Maroon 5.

Would you describe yourself as the outgoing type or as more of an introvert?

I am definitely a people’s person, love being in company and hardly ever find myself chilling alone. Alone time is not something I find myself craving often. I enjoy feeding off the energy of others, witty banter and laughs with friends is what I’m all about.

What has been the highlight of the Idols experience for you so far?

The highlight for me, this far, has been the Radioactive – Imagine Dragons performance.

Which one of your performances did you enjoy doing the most?

Receiving my first good review across the full judges panel was amazing especially seeing as it was my first good comment received from Randal. Ever. He said “You were really good tonight”, and that made me want to run off the stage and hug him!

What does it feel like to be in the top 6?

It’s unreal to be in the top 6, but the pressure keeps on rising each week, especially after falling into the bottom three last week and receiving the comments I did. I really need Durban to get behind me. Each week your performance has to improve and this is also a stress.

If you had an opportunity to sing with one artist, who would it be?

If I had the opportunity to perform with one artist it would be either Lil Wayne or Beyonce. I would love to write and sing a hook to a Lil Wayne track and perform it live with him, and to do a duet with Beyonce would be unreal. She is ridiculously talented and has a following that few others can match.

What would it mean for you to win Idols?

Winning Idols would change my life drastically, it would mean rethinking day to day life. Do I continue being a chiropractor? What do I do with my two practices? Where would I live? Can I stay in Durban? All of these questions I’d have to consider if I won.

What are your goals and plans after Idols?

After Idols I will definitely be heading straight to the studio to finish my first single and thereafter my first album. I will working on some collaborations with some major SA artists and see where that takes us. I will continue song writing with my boy Sketchy Bongo as we produce and write for artists overseas and locally.

Do you write your own music?

I do indeed. I have been writing since I started playing guitar but in the last two years I have really stepped it up a notch and write more often and take it seriously. Every time I’m in studio, which I try for once a week, I have to leave with at least one solid song idea if not an almost completed track.

Is there an instrument you enjoy playing? How many instruments can you play?

I can play the guitar and the piano and on Idols, thanks to Chante and Musa, I have learnt to play the ukulele and the kazoo.
