Skinny mare proud new mom

Frozen Delicious has given birth to healthy filly!

Frozen Delicious, the skinny mare rescued by the Coastal Horse Care Unit from the Rietvlei area a month ago, is a proud new mom!

The mare, who has picked up a considerable amount of weight in the time that she has been at the Unit, gave birth at 6pm on Thursday, 9 October to a strong and healthy filly.

Dr Tom Ovendale from Summerveld Equine Hospital and Laura Smith, Rural Outreach and Training Centre Co-Ordinator for Coastal Horse Care Unit were on hand to assist the mare during the delivery and welcome the new addition. Dr Ovendale was happy with the health of both the mare and the foal after the birth.

“We would like to thank Tom for his time and expertise and for all his help,” said Smith.

Twenty minutes after her birth, the foal was up and walking and suckling on Frozen‘s neck hoping for some milk, hence the decision to name her Love Bite.

“Needless to say we guided her in the correct direction for her to achieve this and she is suckling happily in the correct spot now!” said Smith. She added, “Frozen is a very good mom and very protective of her foal. The filly is super strong and full of attitude.”

The Coastal Team would like to thank all their supporters who donated to the mare’s rehabilitation which has resulted in such a happy ending.

“Thanks to all who came to Frozen Delicious‘ and Love Bite‘s aid. There have been so many people that have contributed to the rehabilitation of this mare and we would like to thank them all from the bottom of our hearts for making this birth a happy occasion instead of what it might have been,” said Smith.
