Westville rotary empowers child carers

In a collaborative effort between Rotary clubs from around the globe, enough funding was gathered to establish a Resource and Training Centre for Early Childhood carers.

ROTARY clubs from around the globe pooled their resources to establish a Resource and Training Centre for Early Childhood carers in the Jamaica area of Chesterville.

The community showed they had a need for such a centre and, with donations from the Breakfast Rotary Club of Murfreesboro in the USA, a Global Grant from the Rotary Foundation, supported by funds from the Rotary Clubs of Kitchener and Winnipeg in Canada, the Murfreesboro Breakfast Club and the Rotary Club of Westville, the plan was put into action.

The centre will be managed by Save the Children and is located on property owned by the Westville Presbyterian Church. The Inkanyezi Creche is on the same plot of land and has, since its opening in 2010, developed into a centre of excellence. The creche is recognised and supported by the residents of the area.

The first training session was held on Thursday 18 September and attended by 22 women from nearby creches. The grant funds will provide a structured programme of training during the next three years, which will culminate in the NQF Level 4 programme.

“This project shows how local Rotary clubs can achieve their goals, and sustain them, by collaborating with other Rotary clubs on an international level,” said Jenny Flower, member of the Rotary Club of Westville.
