Sunfield slim line calendars on sale

Support Sunfield Homes, that cares for mentally and physically challenged adults, by purchasing a new slim line calendar for 2015.

FRIENDS of Sunfield Durban have printed slim line calendars which are on sale at R35 each.

Sunfield Home which is a non-profit organisation, was founded in Howick in 1955, and is run by a board of directors consisting of parents, siblings of residents and interested parties, who act in a voluntary non-paying position.

The Home caters for 110 mentally and physically challenged adults aged between 18 and 74 years, all of whom live on the premises. In February 2005, Sunfield Home Howick celebrated its Jubilee-50 years of caring for the mentally challenged.

According to Yvonne McNair, fundraising officer at Sunfield Home Durban, the aim is to provide a secure, caring and home-like environment, and to involve each resident in appropriate training, as well as occupational and recreational activities to enhance their lifelong well being.

“To this end, each resident attends occupational therapy five days a week, a sporting programme is also in place, and the residents enjoy outings as well as normal leisure time. As they age, frail care becomes necessary and this, coupled with our non-racial commitment to a loving and caring environment, has made us a leading organisation in our field. For most of them this is their home away from home,” said McNair.

Sunfield Homes are also involved in two outreach projects. The first project is a Caregiver’s Course which runs for three weeks empowering people to care for the sick, mentally challenged and the aged and to implement palliative care and assist in death and dying for those that are unable to be hospitalised.

The second project is Angels Care, which is also a non-profit organization that concerns itself with the welfare of desperately needy children within the area of Umgeni Municipality, focusing on breaking the cycle of indigence and deprivation. They currently care for 70 children, assisting with education, feeding schemes and the health of the children.

Sunfield Home is active in fundraising and funds collected are used for the upkeep and maintenance of the groups and buildings and in addition, subsidising indigent residents who are reliant on the Home for all their needs. The Friends of Sunfield in Durban, whose members are parents and friends who have the interests of Sunfield Home at heart, are also involved in raising funds for the Home.
