Construction worker critical after crash

Due to the man's extensive injuries, Advanced Life Support was needed before he was airlifted to a Durban hospital.

A CONSTRUCTION worker waving a red flag to warn of upcoming roadworks in Shepstone Road in New Germany, was in a critical condition after he was hit by a vehicle.

According to Robert Mckenzie, media spokesman for EMS, paramedics traversed through heavily congested mid-morning traffic, made worse by road works in the area, to the incident.

Paramedics from KZN Emergency Medical Services and a local private ambulance responded.

Paramedics found the man lying on the road in a critical condition, with his warning flag lying nearby. “The man’s critical injuries required advanced life support on scene and the team of paramedics worked together to provide the emergency care he required,” said Mckenzie.

“Due to the critical nature of his injuries and the severe traffic congestion, which had been made worse by the accident, the decision was made to airlift the man to hospital.”

The helicopter landed at a nearby sports field off Broadway and the construction worker, who had been prepped for airlift, was loaded into the helicopter. He was transported to a private hospital in Durban for level one trauma care. The local SAPS were in the scene and will be investigating the accident.
