Fire erupts at local supermarket

A quick-thinking reaction officer was able to douse the flames before serious damage was caused.

AN electrical fire erupted at a Pinetown supermarket at about 2.30am last Wednesday morning, but the inferno was quickly extinguished by a patrolling reaction officer.

According to Blue Security’s operations manager, Brian Jackson, the reaction officer was on patrol on Josiah Gumede Road when he noticed the kiosk was enveloped in flames.

“He stopped at the supermarket and used a car jack to force open the front glass door before he grabbed a fire extinguisher to quench the flames,” said Jackson.

“The fire appeared to have been caused by an electrical fault near the cigarette counter where a flame ignited and spread around the kiosk. There was damage to stock but fortunately our officer’s quick action contained the fire and minimised what could have resulted in even further serious damage to the property,” he continued.

He commend the brave action of the reaction officer who went beyond the call of duty to protect the supermarket’s property.

The Pinetown SAPS and the Fire Department also attended the scene.
