Taxi ploughs into fire engine

A taxi ploughed into a fire engine that was attending another accident on the M13.

EIGHT passengers were injured on Sunday when the taxi they were travelling in ploughed into a fire engine on the M13 Durban bound near Dawncliffe in Westville.

The fire engine, which was en route to another accident, narrowly missed emergency personnel who were in attendance when the taxi smashed into it, forcing it off course.

Garreth Jamieson, Rescue Cares operations director said the emergency paramedics were attending to a collision in which a car had overturned and rolled down the embankment when they heard brakes screeching and ran for cover.

“The out of control taxi smashed into the back of the fire engine. Eight passengers from the taxi sustained various injuries and were stabilized on the scene before being transported to various Durban hospitals,” said Jamieson.

He added that it was unclear what caused the taxi to go out of control, however the necessary authorities were on the scene and will be investigating.

No emergency personnel who were attending the first accident were injured in the secondary collision.
