Non-stop cricket planned for weekend

Some of the province’s top U11 cricketers displaying their talent at Kearsney and Highbury College this weekend.

KEARSNEY College and Highbury College play host to the annual Kingsmead Mynahs three-day tournament, showcasing U11 cricketing talent in the province, this weekend.

Sixteen teams are scheduled to take part in the Waltons 20/20 U11 cricket tournament, with 14 top primary school teams and two development sides sponsored by the KZN Cricket Union competing this year.

Participating schools are the Hillcrest Hotshots, Winston Park Pythons, Highbury Hurricanes, HCA Pinch Hitters, Kloof Cobras, Westville Warriors, DPHS Dragons, Glenwood Hoppers, Clifton Chargers, Northlanders, Chelsea Lions, Pelham Panthers, St Charles Strikers and Umhlali Dolphins.

In addition to the school teams, there will be two development sides sponsored by the KZN Cricket Union – the Umgeni Mambas and Durban Central Tigers.

Teams will play in pools of eight and play seven games in the three days. The tournament runs from Friday 3 October through to Sunday 5 October. Full catering facilities will be available at the Kearsney coffee shop.

The tournament was the idea of retired Kearsney cricket coach Phil Ratcliffe and is run by himself and Mike Griffiths. They organise what has proved to be an exciting and fun-filled three days of non-stop cricket, with some of the province’s top U11 cricketers displaying their talent.
