Scott’s celebrate diamond anniversary

Amelia and Max Scott celebrated their diamond (60th) wedding anniversary on Thursday 18 September.

BOTHA’S Hill residents, Amelia and Max Scott, never thought that a simple introduction by neighbours 60 years ago would lead them to celebrating their diamond anniversary this year.

Max was boarding across from where Amelia lived in Springs. He saw her drive up to her house one day and although he said he never saw her face that day, a little voice told him that this was the girl he was going to marry. They were introduced by mutual neighbours a week later and as they say, the rest was history.

The couple courted for a few months, were engaged for a year and finally tied the knot at the Dutch Reform Church in Springs on 18 September 1965. They honeymooned at Lourenço Marques (now Maputo) in Mozambique before Max was transferred to Durban and they have been here since.

Back then Max worked for an electrical company and Amelia as a legal secretary in the law courts. Max then opened his own business, Max Scott Engineering, which he retired from two years ago.

They believe they’ve shared a successful and blessed marriage due to always understanding and allowing each other their space and keeping a strong faith which has pulled them through all that life has thrown towards them.

“Amelia has truly been an inspiration to me. She has helped me achieve all that I have today,” said Max.

Amelia smiled and said she loved his sense of humour and was glad that they share the same ideas in life. “Max has really brought me out of my shell and I thank God for that,” added Amelia.

Although the couple were unable to have children, they said they had a blessed life and were fortunate enough to travel extensively, and experience most luxuries of life. They also have a loving family on both sides and a large circle of friends who always keep them occupied.

Max always kept busy with his business but now enjoys cultivating orchids while Amelia has a passion for music. She has been going to the Symphonic concerts for 25 years and in recent years convinced her darling husband to accompany her which, she said, was quite an achievement.

The couple celebrated their diamond anniversary at a romantic lunch together. “We really enjoy each other’s company and enjoy “hitting on” and teasing each other,” said Amelia.

Max concluded: “We certainly hope and pray for many more years together even though the “boss” is a little cheeky.”
